The airspace around Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is changing significantly. Due to increased passenger traffic, aviation activity, and growth across the Northern Rivers region, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and Airservices Australia are introducing controlled airspace and enhanced air traffic services around Ballina.
For drone operators, this is not just an aviation update. It may directly affect existing approvals, operational procedures, flight planning, and access to airspace.
Ballina Byron Gateway Airport has become one of the busiest regional airports in Australia. CASA’s airspace review identified the need for additional air traffic services to safely manage increasing aircraft movements.
The new airspace structure will introduce controlled airspace around Ballina, including Class D airspace and associated controlled airspace steps beneath existing Class C airspace.
Airservices has advised that the new controlled airspace and flight paths are expected to commence on 9 July 2026, with air traffic control services expected to operate daily from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm local time.
CASA has informed Hover UAV that standing permissions previously issued for operations in the affected airspace will not automatically carry across. This means recreational, excluded category, and commercial drone operators may need to review how they operate around Ballina.

Operators working around Ballina, Lismore, Casino, Evans Head, and nearby areas should review whether their operations may be affected by changed aircraft routes.

Operators should start preparing before the implementation date. Review existing CASA approvals, especially for BVLOS, EVLOS, above 400 ft, area approvals, or recurring operations near Ballina.

Review flight planning tools, geofencing systems, internal maps, and pilot briefing material to ensure remote pilots are not using outdated airspace assumptions.
Risk assessments should consider controlled airspace, changed traffic patterns, IFR operations, airspace steps, ATC service hours, emergency procedures, lost link scenarios, and crewed aircraft routes.
Operators with complex approvals should engage CASA early to confirm whether amendments or reapplications are required.
